When you think about networking, what comes to mind?

A sleazy, scammy guy with his hair greased back, fake smile, and his business card always in hand?

That's what most people think about networking. That it's slimy and fake.

But that idea is false. Networking doesn't have to be slimy. Nor does it need to be scary or overwhelming. Believe it or not, it can actually be fun. Even if you think you "hate" networking.

The key is to reframe what networking means to you. Instead of trying to get something from someone, focus on trying to give people something of value. In this article, I'll show you how to do exactly that.

I'm not exaggerating when I say networking is the #1 reason for any success I've had.

If you follow the two easy rules in this article - just two! - you'll find yourself surrounded by people who want to help you achieve your goals. Best of all, you won't even know you're networking.
Strategy #1: Introduce your friends to each other

Good news: You already have a network. If you have an email account - which you do - you have a network.

And you already know interesting people. Even better, you know interesting people who don't yet know each other.

So my challenge to you is simple: Introduce your friends to each other.

Connecting people who can help each other is a highly useful skill. When you connect people to others they wouldn't otherwise know, and to opportunities they wouldn't otherwise have, they'll remember you. And they'll be grateful that you helped them.


This is what networking really looks like

Now, I'll assume you know how to talk to your friends. Great. All you need to do is to talk to two of them. at the same time.

Here's how to connect two friends.

Pick a friend. Ask yourself: What do they need? Maybe they're a runner and they just moved to a new town, so they're looking for the best trails in the area. Maybe the start-up they were working at just went under and they're looking for a tech job.

Once you identify their need, think about who you know who can help with that need.

Then make an introduction. You can use this word-for-word email script:



One quick email, and now Chris is grateful to you for connecting him with a key player at his ideal company. And Jeff is grateful you've introduced him to someone with similar interests.

This is how effortless networking really is.

But what about networking with people who aren't your friends? That's where my second strategy comes into play.
Strategy #2: Close the loop

Let's say you meet someone for an informational interview. You leave the meeting feeling good, but you're not sure what to do next.

Everyone sends a thank you email. (At least everyone intelligent does.)

You, on the other hand, can stand out by using my Closing the Loop technique. As I explain in the video below, this powerful technique helps you stay in touch with people you've met once, and turn a one-time meeting into a long-term relationship.

When you use this strategy, you'll stay at the top of their minds. And that can lead to jobs with them or with people in their network.

Plus, there's no chance you'll come off as sleazy, slimy, or scammy, because you're putting their needs ahead of your own.

Here are the exact email scripts my students and I use to extend relationships beyond the initial meeting.

Email #1: Thank you (same day)



Notice the simple thank you, as well as a reference to a specific action item you're going to follow up on. This shows that you were paying attention during the meeting/call. This email ends with a friendly offer to help and asks nothing of the VIP.

Email #2: Add value (1-2 weeks later)



This email is where things start to get surprising. The VIP likely didn't expect to hear back from you, since almost nobody follows up beyond one email. In this email, you're sending a valuable piece of material - an article, blog post, photo, whatever - of something you KNOW he will find interesting.

How do you know what he'll find interesting? Because during your meeting, you listened and took careful notes.

Finally, pay close attention to the phrase used in the last sentence: "No response needed." This is music to a busy person's ears.

Think about it: I get 1000+ emails/day. Do you know what most of them are about? Someone wants something from me. When you can say "No response needed" and send me something I find fascinating, you're adding value to my life.

Email #3: Close the loop (2-3 weeks later)

Finally, here you show the VIP that you took action on what he suggested. This will instantly differentiate you from 99% of people. Notice that you name specific names and let him know if he was right (or if you chose something different than his recommendation).

The simplicity of the Closing the Loop technique belies its effectiveness. It seems simple and obvious - until you use it. Then its true power is revealed.

Of course, not every networking challenge can be solved by Closing the Loop.

Tony Robbins said something fascinating in a talk about feeding 100 million families.

He pointed out that if you think of your work as a "sacrifice," you've set yourself up for failure.

As soon as you use words like "sacrifice," you transform yourself into a martyr - and no one recovers from being a martyr. That identity creates a box for you to live in.

I want to talk about the psychology of being a martyr. Tony was speaking to CEOs, but once you understand the martyr mentality, you see it everywhere.

WORKAHOLISM: "When I'm sleeping, someone else is hustling. My employees are counting on me. I have to work 16 hour days."
BAD RELATIONSHIPS: "I want to be single, but my boyfriend threatened suicide last month. He'll fall apart if I leave."
PARENTING: "Jane has ballet rehearsal. These clothes won't fold themselves. And there are toys everywhere. So much for going out. Supermom to the rescue!"

Can you spot the pattern?

Hint: Anyone who says "I can't be happy because of X" has turned themselves into a martyr.

Curiously, you can give martyrs 10 ways to overcome that problem and it won't help. Martyrs believe they need to be miserable for other people to be happy. And they use a secret vocabulary to stay that way.

For example, "supermom" sounds amazing. Who wouldn't want to be a supermom? Yet many moms use this label to justify putting themselves last. Want proof? Offer solutions and watch what happens:

If you recommend a nanny, she'll say "too expensive"
If you suggest afterschool programs, she'll say "kids need quality time"
If grandparents offer to babysit, she'll say "we can't put you out"

Slowly, you realize what's actually going on. Martyrs have written an identity of powerlessness. And they won't give it up without a fight.

After all: If you go out and have a blast with friends, what does it say about the last 5 years you stayed home?

Pretty painful to admit you had the power all along. Much more comfortable to stick with the identity you know.

Want to know the fastest way to find out what your friends think of you?

Change your wardrobe. Try it and watch.

If you've been wearing t-shirts and jeans your whole life, expect comments like these the first time you throw on a blazer:

"Whoa. Who are you trying to impress?" (The coded message - "don't get too big for your britches")
"Where are you going dress liked THAT?" (The implication - "you need an occasion to look good")
"Stick to what you know, dude." ("You're changing and I don't like it")

I know, because people said all these things to me! And many of us have said similar things ourselves. But it's not selfish or shallow to look your best. How you dress is a huge part of living a Rich Life. Looking great and feeling great matters a lot.

In fact, dressing well improves your own feelings about yourself. A 2015 study from Columbia University found that dressing sharply "made people feel more powerful, which in turn made them more likely to adopt high-level, abstract thinking."

My whole experience of life changed when I went from looking like this.

STOP! Notice the first thoughts that pop into our head:

"Oh, so I need to wear a blazer every day to look my best? Forget it."
"Your wardrobe is the only reason you have a video crew and a successful business?"
"Must be nice to buy whatever clothes you want. I can barely make rent!"

Look - you're an adult. Wear what you want. I'm not your mom and I'm not telling you what to do.

What I am telling you is that my mood, my confidence, and how I connected with others all improved dramatically once I dressed better.

Maybe the research is wrong. Maybe I'm delusional. OR maybe those objections are excuses for ignoring your appearance.

I'm curious: If you ever felt like clothes didn't matter - like I used to - what's one phrase you told yourself? How did it hold you back?

A lot of people think I define a "Rich Life" as mostly about money. Wrong!

I think money is an important, but small part of a Rich Life.

Also included:

Your job/business
Being able to travel
Relationships: Friends, your girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse, sexuality, attraction
Style: What you wear and how you look
Fitness and health: How to look and feel amazing

Today, we're going to talk about RELATIONSHIPS.

To start, think about the last time you got excited and shared that excitement with someone else. Maybe it was losing weight, starting a business, traveling somewhere exotic.whatever.

I love noticing people's responses. They're so revealing.

For example, some people say, "WOW! That sounds amazing!"

Others say, "I wish I could do that" (code for: "I could never do that because [insert excuse here]").

Or one of my favorites: "There's more to life than making money."

The last one is very telling. I absolutely loved this comment in a blog post about ambition:

"What irks me are the assumptions inherent in people saying 'There's more to life than just.'

What have I said that makes you think I'm excluding other 'important' things? Why are you positioning my ambition and other aspects of life as two separate ideas, as if they don't connect or enhance each other (for example, can't a love for your family fuel your ambition?).

The phrase says a lot more about the person saying it than the person it is being said to."

Statements like, "There's more to life than just." are what I call extreme-reach barriers. We use these phrases whenever we focus on the worst possible outcomes (irrationally) instead of what we want.

How many of us claim we want something, then let extreme-reach barriers hold us back?

Some of my favorite examples.

Starting a business: "I wish I could, but I don't have enough time. I don't want a second full-time job."
Working out: "So you're saying I'd have to go to the gym every day for the rest of my life to lose weight? Forget it!"
Getting married: "Have fun while you're single, because marriage is a graveyard."

That last one may strike a nerve with the systems weirdos who read my site.

Isn't it interesting that we'll read 6,253,468 articles about Pomodoro Technique this and No-Carb that - and then make the most lazy assumptions about what research says is the #1 driver of a Rich Life: our relationships?

My friend Ryan Holiday wrote about this in his post: The Perfect Spouse Is The Best Life Hack No One Told You About:

"For all the productivity and success advice I've read, shaped and marketed for dozens of authors in the last decade, I've never really seen someone come out and say: Find yourself a spouse who complements and supports you and makes you better.

Instead, we're supposed to believe that relationships tie people down, that they are the death knell for creativity and ambition. When Cyril Connolly said that there was 'no more somber enemy of good art than the pram in the hall,' he was voicing, in appalling clarity, the selfishness and self-absorption that draws many people away from love and happiness."

I love Ryan's take.

Not just because he rejects everything our culture (especially Silicon Valley's "success" culture) tells us about marriage, but because he goes deeper.

It's EASY to sit in your computer chair and say "screw relationships, I'm trying to change the world." Or to struggle on, assuming your personal life and work life don't dramatically affect each other. It's much more challenging to say, "You know what? Relationships matter a lot. I'm going to figure out how to have an amazing relationship and change the world."

Yes and yes!

Look: I'm not telling you to go get married tomorrow. I'm not married yet, either. The point is that when you fall back on extreme-reach barriers (instead of thinking for yourself), you block yourself from defining - and living - your own Rich Life.
The #1 extreme-reach barrier in relationships

We've all heard it: "Once you get married, bye-bye sex life." I wanted to explore this, so I invited Esther Perel (bestselling author of Mating in Captivity) into my studio to talk about the unwritten rules of intimacy.

What Esther revealed is that a stale sex life is NOT the inevitable dead-end of a relationship.

It's the result of breaking rules that:

We don't even know we're breaking
And often have nothing to do with sex

Quote:Here's an interesting thing I learned when I used to consult for venture capital firms. If all goes according to plan.

Out of a ton of potential deals, a VC firm will invest in 10 companies.

5 of those will go bankrupt. They know this and expect it.

3 of them will "trade sideways," meaning they'll basically putter along.

But 1 of them will be a huge hit. Like Google/Uber-worthy hits. That single deal pays for everything else.

What are the interesting things to take away from this example?

After a while, you can build a model of what you expect and optimize for it. For example, I used to get random speeding tickets, but then I realized I could predict when I would get them, so I built them into my automation model.
Being the best is way, way better than being #2. Like 1,000x better.

I want to talk about studying the best, because I've noticed too many people studying nutjobs and weirdos and thinking it's okay.

I see people buying courses from some random guy living in his mom's basement, selling an ebook on how to make a billion dollars, and I want to put my head in my hands.

I'd rather introduce you to amazing, successful entrepreneurs who can show you new ways to think. There's major value in learning from the best: They've seen tons of scenarios, they've surrounded themselves with better people, and they've gotten more "at-bat" opportunities than almost anyone else.

To do that, I went to one of the most successful consultants in the world. In fact, if you google "helping successful leaders," you'll notice something strange. Virtually all of the 3,530 search results point to one person: Dr. Marshall Goldsmith.

Harvard Business Review and The Wall Street Journal note that Dr. Goldsmith is one of the top 10 leadership and business experts in the world. He's also the author of What Got You Here Won't Get You There (one of my favorite book titles of all time).

I recently sat down with him and asked him questions I'd been wanting to ask for years. Like, "What do you really teach the CEO of Wal-Mart when you do a consulting project? How does it even work when you walk in the room?"

Being the best is never an accident. If you're aiming to be amazing at what you do - whether it's your business, your job, or even your relationship - one of the best things you can do is elevate who you study from.

(For example, no more reading life coaches who are secretly struggling to pay their bills.)

Dr. Goldsmith is one of the few people who can answer these questions. Recently, I sat down to talk with him as part of my Brain Trust Program.

I want to share one of my favorite parts from our chat. In it, he talks about:

Quote:A few years ago, I was at a dinner party with a bunch of new people. There were lots of people from the self-development world and we were all getting to know each other.

It was a pretty normal dinner until one woman - who'd been in a string of bad relationships - started asking for advice from the "love coach" sitting across from her.

"It's not about finding random men," she said. "I keep going on horrible dates. The guys are unavailable. Why can't I find someone real?"

It's actually pretty amazing to hear this in public from someone you just met. I sat back, slowly chewing and loving every minute of it.

The love coach sat back and waited for her to finish. "Are you sure you want to change?"

The girl: "YES!"

And then she said this:

"You've been public as a single woman. You've written columns about going on dates. Your entire identity is about being single. If you got in a serious relationship, you'd have to rewrite that entire identity. Are you ready for that?"

I will never forget the look on this woman's face. She was completely dumbfounded.

Of course, I found this fascinating. Even though this woman claimed she wanted to change, in reality, she didn't want to give up being single.

Every date, she looked for the tiniest things to go wrong. And when they did, it was an instant red flag, "This guy's all wrong for me." In other words, she'd written off her dates and committed to staying single - before they even happened!

The most interesting part is she hadn't even realized she was doing this until the love coach pointed it out.

How many of us have created an identity around something that's holding us back from living a Rich Life?

The truth is, we all do this. How many of us want to change our job, lose 20lbs, or dress better? Easy to complain about it. But what if there was an invisible script guiding us to make the wrong decisions.that we didn't even consciously recognize? ("I'm not the kind of guy who needs to change my clothing.that's for shallow people.")

We all have this - me included! There are things I want to do that I can't seem to bring myself to do. And that's why I flew one of the world's foremost experts on changing behavior into studio for an interview.

Quote:Dealing with a bad boss: Nutty horror stories
OK, who here has a terrible boss?

Today, I want to talk about them, because if you have one, you think about them every single day you go to work.

What makes a bad boss?

Maybe they're overbearing and rude. Maybe they dismiss every idea you have.

Or maybe they're the spineless boss that meekly says, "Sorry, I can't give you a raise.that's all the wiggle room I have." If he can't stand up for himself, how will he ever stand up for you?

Just try to imagine the look on someone's face on a Sunday afternoon as they think about going back to work for their boss the next day. I can see them in my mind, drinking at a Sunday brunch and complaining about something their boss did. Their friends, who've heard this 50 times, roll their eyes and try to change the subject. It's hilarious.as long as it's someone else. That last line is also my life philosophy.

A bad boss means that every day - for 8+ hours/day, 2,000+ hours/year - some of us are walking around on pins and needles, dreading seeing our boss. It's like walking around with a 50lb weight on your shoulders that you can't take off.because it's also secretly keeping you alive (aka giving you a paycheck).

Now here's the interesting part.

Of all the people who have bad bosses, how many leave to find another job? Maybe 1 in 100? Why does everyone else stay? You're not a slave. You can leave whenever you want.

There's a lot of boo-hoo, woe-is-me, waa-the-economy-is-so-bad. Actually, no, it's not. Top performers can get a job in days in this economy. (In fact, we're hiring for lots of positions.)

If you have a bad boss, it's not your fault - but it is your responsibility to do something about it. Once you've admitted that your boss is bad and you want out, you have 3 options:

Try to change your boss (unlikely)
Find another job (hmm, if only there were some way to find your Dream Job)
Do nothing and complain (I'll see you in hell)

It's just like being in a bad relationship. You can blame it on them all you want.but ultimately, it's your decision to stay or leave.

One of the skills that few people talk about is knowing when to quit. Seth Godin writes about this in The Dip, where he says:

".What really sets superstars apart from everyone else is the ability to escape dead ends quickly, while staying focused and motivated when it really counts.

Winners quit fast, quit often, and quit without guilt - until they commit to beating the right Dip for the right reasons."

For all the people who complain about a bad boss, how many of them spotted the telltale signs - years ago? And did nothing?

Ultimately, it comes down to this: You don't have to accept a bad boss. It's not "normal" or part of paying your dues. Nobody should have to sigh and say, "Another Monday.back to the grind."

I actually think a lot of us are in this situation - a lot more than we want to admit. So I want open up the conversation around this.

Recently, I heard one of the most fascinating boss horror stories of all time. It came from a guest in my Brain Trust program, Kevin Hillstrom. Today, Kevin is the CEO of a successful business, MineThatData (and an amazing strategist). But early in his career, he was an awkward junior analyst - with ZERO communication and business skills.

One day, he was sitting in his cubicle and overheard his boss saying horrible things about him behind closed doors.

Instead of complaining about how bad his boss was, he took a totally different perspective - one that changed his entire career.

How do you get a CEO, TV producer, or potential mentor to write back to your email, and say yes to your request?

The most powerful people, who can open up doors for you, are also the busiest people. Before even having their morning coffee, they open their email to see dozens - if not hundreds - of requests that have already started pouring in.

Quote:The psychology of your selfies

Ramit Sethi

First, let's get one thing straight. It's not that you're naturally photogenic or un-photogenic.

You can look better in photos. Looking good in photos is a skill. I know, because I'm the king of BAD PHOTOS.

On the left is me in 2009. It's not embarrassingly bad, but a good photographer could point out multiple problems in about 5 seconds. On the right, a much better headshot from 2015.

As usual, most people talk about random tactics ("point the camera higher") but the real win is in the psychology. Fix your psychology and you'll fix your photos. Let's start with an example.

I know a guy who doesn't smile on camera. Let's call him Jim. He's a nice guy, and his wife smiles in all their photos, but strangely he never does. After you see 3, 4, 5, photos, it's very noticeable.

Why do you think this is? Any guesses?

A couple weeks ago, Jim put a photo on Facebook. In the very first comment, I saw this: "Wow! Is Jim smiling?!"

I was also surprised - I've never seen him smile in a photo. Now, what was different about this photo than all the others?

Simple. Jim didn't know he was being photographed. Somebody just snapped the picture while he was talking to his wife.

As a guy who didn't smile for years (to the point where it cost me tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships), I found this fascinating. In fact, lots of Indian/Asian guys don't smile in their photos. Have you noticed that?

Clearly, Jim's non-smiling isn't some biological flaw he was born with. He can smile on camera. It's an emotional barrier - one I'd be willing to bet stretches back to childhood.

Some guesses:

Maybe his mom told him to stop smiling because "boys should act serious" (again, ask an Asian/Indian guy why many of them don't smile in photos)
Maybe he had messed-up teeth in a school photo and stopped smiling after kids made fun of him and called him "chainsaw"

Whatever the reason, Jim DECIDED to stop smiling. And from that day forward, he created an identity for himself as "a guy who doesn't smile." Eventually, after years of repetition, it became a habit.

Can you think of anything in your life where you literally rewrote your identity.and soon it almost seemed "natural?"

Hints: People who are overweight, people who "aren't good at reading" or "aren't good at school," and tall women who crouch down in photos.

Jim's habit is so deeply ingrained that, if he changed, he'd have to face the overwhelming pressure of everyone's reactions. Even though they would be positive!

Think about it - if 20 people tell him "Wow, you look amazing!" - now the spotlight is shining on something he hid for 20 years. That's extremely uncomfortable. Plus, what would it say about how wrong he's been this entire time?

It's kind of like when I went through puberty, and some auntie heard my voice, which was suddenly deeper. "Beta ('dear'), say something again! Ha ha!" I can remember being so self-conscious. Ugh.

In this way, Jim's non-smiling is the same as our own self-development. We've all woven certain behaviors or ideas into our identity:

"I'm an overwhelmed single mother."
"I'm too introverted to talk to women."
"I hate emotional conversations."

Technically, we could change these behaviors tomorrow. But it's taken a lifetime to get here, and the change is overwhelming - even when the results of changing are positive.

One last thing: I know Jim. I know his wife would love for him to smile more. And with my knowledge of psychology, I could talk to him for less than 30 minutes and change his non-smiling habit forever.

But he's never asked, so it's not my place to say anything.

Part of going through the journey of life is doing it for yourself. People can teach you the right words and magical scripts, but nobody can walk through the fire of change for you.

Now, my question for you:

What's one behavior that's become part of YOUR identity without you necessarily wanting it to be there?
