How to grow a successful business, with Jermaine Griggs | Ramit's Brain Trust

How to work smarter, not harder - with Jermaine Griggs

About a year or two ago, I bought a $2,000 course on automation that blew me away. It was one of the most advanced courses I've ever purchased.

I got so interested that I ended up becoming friends with the founder, and I want to share some of what I learned about automation with you today.

Automation is a powerful tool you can use to create more freedom, flexibility, and fun in your day.

OTHER PEOPLE: "I need more time. I have a million things to do, and I have no idea how I'm going to get everything done."

IWT READERS: "Wait a minute. What if I put repetitive and redundant tasks - like checking emails, paying my bills, or doing laundry - on autopilot.so instead of worrying about this stuff I could focus on the things I really love?"

I've shown you how to build an automation system for your finances and your inbox. Turns out, you can use this same principle of building automated systems in nearly every area of your life.

At a certain point, we can't just "try harder" and hustle to get things done. The returns diminish over time. We have to work smarter - not just try harder - to get ahead.

I know, I know, we've all heard the eye-roll-inducing phrase "work smarter, not harder, blah.blah.blah" but let me show you some examples of how that actually works:

Try harder: "I'm going to TRY to spend less time answering emails."
Work smarter: "I'm turning over ALL of my work emails to a Virtual Assistant."

Try harder: "I'm going to TRY to exercise more this week."
Work smarter: "I'm going to give my neighbor the keys to my car for a few days so I HAVE to walk to work."

Try harder: "I'm going to TRY to stay off Facebook this month."
Work smarter: "I'm going to remove all social media apps from my phone and set my web browser so I ALWAYS have to manually log into Facebook every single time."

Note: These aren't subtle differences. They're complete mindset shifts that lead to dramatically different results.

It's easy to easy to nod along and say, "Yeah, I know. Automation and working smarter really pays off. But what else do you have?"

Looking for tactics is a loser's game. Winners put systems in place so they cannot fail.

Anyone who's ever tried to lose weight, start a business, or spend more time with their families (distraction-free) knows all the tactics - all the information - they need to make a change.

Yet how many times do we see the same people, trying the same goal again and again and they're always "buckling down this time"?

What's that tell you? That there's a lot more to success than just learning a few tactics.

You need systems that let you consistently get more done in less time so you can focus on the things you really enjoy.
How to work smarter - not harder - and get more out of life

The expert at building and automating these systems to work smarter, not harder, is Jermaine Griggs. He's the founder of http://www.HearandPlay.com and http://www.AutomationClinic.com.

jermainegriggs

At 17-years old, while living in his grandma's one-bedroom, inner-city apartment, Jermaine started an online business with a $70 investment. That business - began as a side hobby - eventually turned into a multi-million dollar company.

Today, he teaches hundreds of thousands of people around the world how to play and enjoy music by ear.

Because Jermaine started this business as a high school student and grew it while going to college full-time, he relied heavily on automation to run his business for him.

His drive to systematize his business and marketing evolved into a unique automation philosophy and set of strategies that he follows religiously to this day.

So I invited him to my studio for an exclusive 1-on-1 session to show us how to stop working harder and start working smarter in all areas of our lives.

Instant creativity: the secret to producing great work - Brian Koppelman

Instant creativity: the secret to producing great work - Brian Koppelman

Yesterday we talked about creativity and the myth of "The Great Idea."

Today, I want to go even deeper and show you how you can build a system to unleash your creativity anytime you need it.

I'm going to do that by introducing you to someone whose work you may be very familiar with (even if you don't know him by name). I'd like you to meet Brian Koppelman.
Brian is a screenwriter, novelist, director, and producer. He's one of the masterminds behind hit films such as Ocean's Thirteen, Rounders, and The Illusionist.

Recently, he started a viral, Vine video series called The Six Second Screenwriter and became the host of the ESPN podcast, The Moment with Brian Koppelman.

Brian actually wrote his first screenplay, Rounders - one of my favorite movies - while working a full-time job.

And yet, given just a few hours a day to write and without having any formal training as a screenwriter, he managed to finish the screenplay (which eventually went on to gross $22.9 million in sales worldwide).

I loved hearing his story of how he produced hit after hit.

He didn't want to be a one-hit wonder who came up with one idea and milked it for 20 years. He wanted to learn how to beat the odds, not through luck, but through a creative process.

So I invited him to my studio for an exclusive 1-on-1 session to show us his system for tapping into his creative side and what it really takes to produce great ideas.

I've put together a very special excerpt from my session with Brian.
Want to know what every single top performer I've interviewed in Brain Trust (including CEOs, athletes, and best-selling authors) ALL have in common? Simple. It's habits. Successful people don't just catch a lucky break and coast - they systematically identify and integrate winning habits into their lives, day in and day out, for years.

Inside the secret world of luxury - Steve Sims

Inside the secret world of luxury - Steve Sims

Yesterday, we looked inside the world of luxury. I told you how I learned to get past my knee-jerk reaction of saying "$250 FOR A BURGER!?" and got curious about how this world really worked.

Then, I asked you to share the most expensive thing you've ever paid for.

I LOVED reading your responses (see some of the 180+ comments here).

But here were a few that really stood out to me:

"Paid nearly $4,000 for an Eames lounge chair. Haven't regretted it for a moment, and it automatically improves my day everytime I sit in it. Worth every penny." - Andrew

"I just bought my first $22 bag of coffee - the coffee is outstanding straight-up as an americano with just water and tastes great. Never spent that much on a bag of coffee before." - Brian

"I invested $1,500 in a Persian rug. It took me several hours at the dealer's to pick it out. It is a joy to behold. One glance and you can see why they are called "magic carpets." I've had it for about 12 or 13 years now and it thrills me every day." - Gretchen

"Staying at the Ritz Carlton Maui for over $500/ night for our honeymoon and again 5 years later for our anniversary. The feeling was one of tremendous satisfaction and enjoyment because the value was apparent in every small detail of our stay." - Brian

"I spent $700 on a pair of boots over 7 years ago and at the time it was an insane luxury. I almost hyperventilated when I bought them, I felt irresponsible, I was anxious, and I LOVED THEM!.7 years later I still have them and I still wear them and they're still hot!! I still get compliments." - Priya

What do you notice about these comments?

I'll tell you what I notice. It's the actual words people use to describe the luxuries they've owned:

"Worth every penny."
"It thrills me!"
"Outstanding!"

I point this out because when we actually experience luxuries, we see how great it feels. Luxury isn't for arrogant, slicked-back-hair CEOs.

If you can afford it, and you want it, there's nothing wrong with treating yourself from time to time.

That's one of the reasons why I've always said you should cut costs mercilessly on the things you don't care about and - this is almost MORE important - spend extravagantly on the things you love.

For me, I love really nice hotels. Here's a video I took at a Four Seasons in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

I'm willing to spend extravagantly on this.

But - at the same time - you won't see me spend a penny more on the things that aren't important to me, like my cell phone bill, car insurance, or cable (I don't even have a TV).

My key point to you today is to challenge the puritanical American notion that luxury is bad, or that it's for "other" people - the rich, the famous, the elite. If you want it, you can get it.

Look at the comments from above, it can be as simple as splurging on an expensive blend of coffee or buying a $700 pair of boots.

And, to dive even deeper into the world of luxury, I went to the source - a high-end concierge who provides luxury experiences that nobody else can get.
Your backstage pass to the luxury world

Introducing Steve Sims, the founder of Bluefish, a luxury concierge service that provides high-ranking corporate executives, celebrities, professional athletes, and successful business owners with "once-in-a-lifetime" experiences.

When it comes to what he can do for his clients, he likes to say "there are no limits."

His company does everything from planning custom luxury vacations to organizing huge, one-night events.
Just some of the remarkable experiences that he and his team have created include:

A private visit to the International Space Station
An exclusive submarine trip to see the wreckage of the Titanic
Having Florida Georgia Line sing "Happy Birthday" to a client in a private backstage concert
.and the list goes on and on

Over the years, he's worked with people like Richard Branson, Elon Musk, Arianna Huffington, Sting, and many, many more.

These experiences are very expensive. But instead of just looking at the sticker price, I asked him to join me in NYC to talk about the psychology of luxury. Who uses his services? Why? Is it really that much better?

Interestingly, Steve started his career as a bricklayer and nightclub bouncer - with ZERO connections. Now he has millionaire and billionaire clients all over the world.

Here's an 8-minute excerpt from our chat. In it, Steve talks about how he creates these luxury experiences and how you can get access to this world.

Notice the difference between what other people teach you - Cut back on everything! Don't spend on anything! - and what I teach you. You CAN have a Rich Life, even if that means flying first class, paying for your parents' retirement, or hiring someone to cook for you and pack your luggage (I've done all of these things).

Ramit's Brain Trust - Money habits and secrets of the ultra-wealthy

Fact: people would rather talk about death than their personal finances

That's right. Out of all the traditionally taboo topics - politics, religion, sex - it turns out that money is the biggest taboo topic of all.

I find this fascinating at all levels.but especially when you start talking about serious wealth.

Just imagine how this scenario would play out: You're out getting drinks with friends. Everyone's laughing and having a good time. Then out the blue, one person asks you, "Hey, I'm curious - how much money do you make?"

How fast would the group go quiet?

In my experience, most of us would just not answer (including me). But why is that? Is the number:

Too personal?
Something that makes us feel bad?
Embarrassing because our salary is too low?
Capable of making things "weird" and damaging relationships.because you make too much?

For a lot of us, the answer is YES! All of the above! It's opening up a can of worms that we just don't want to deal with.

And yet.secretly.we ALL want to know.

How much does SHE make? He's worth HOW much? Oh wow.I had no idea you could earn that much at 26.

I want to peel back the layers on this very taboo topic. And to help us explore this subject, I brought in the expert: Paul Sullivan.

The money habits and secrets of the ultra-wealthy

Paul is the author two best-selling books and a writer of the Wealth Matters column for The New York Times.

His latest book, The Thin Green Line: The Money Secrets of The Super Wealthy, reveals the habits, worldviews, and practices of the wealthiest people in the world.

Here's what I really love about Paul's approach. Rather than spouting out generic tips like "save more than you spend" or "cut back on lattes," he went straight to the source: people with lots and lots of money.

He hunted down the wealthiest people he could find, interviewed them, and documented everything he learned.

He wanted to know:

How do the wealthy people really think about money?
What do they really do with their investments?
What kinds of things do they really talk about with other wealthy people - behind closed doors?

What he found is shocking. Wealth isn't just about the number of dollars you can stuff into your bank account. It's also about your mindset and how you think about money.

Here's a short excerpt from our chat. In it, Paul talks about what he's learned from the wealthiest people. He also shares how you can start implementing some of their ideas in your own life.

This is something I love doing in NYC
For eating, just check out my NYC restaurants bookmarks.

But if you're wondering what to do, I always give them the same answer: A MUSEUM TOUR.

I know, I know. Who the hell wants to go to a museum?

But it's not what you expect. Not only is it one of my favorite things to do in NYC, it shows how you can take something everyone thinks is boring - like going to a museum - and totally transform the experience.

When I went on my tour, we went into secret rooms and elevators. The tour guide told us all the gossip, politics, and behind the scenes stuff you never hear on a traditional tour.

These amazing museum tours are put on by one of my friends, Nick Gray.
Nick Gray, founder of Museum Hack

You know that person who's always going to interesting events? The one who has obscure recommendations that just happen to be amazing? That's Nick - he's the guy I go to when I'm looking for something weird/interesting to do.

Nick is the founder of Museum Hack, a company that's totally re-engineering the museum experience.

I asked Nick to join me in the RBT studio to talk about how to take something that everyone does the same, then do it totally differently - and get people raving about it.

Nick talked about how he changed the traditional museum tour. Then he showed how to take the same techniques and apply it to:

Throwing awesome parties that all your friends want to attend
Sending emails that get responses from even the busiest people
Building a business around your passion and charging what you're worth

Even in this short excerpt that I put together for you, you'll learn some of the best hacks Nick's discovered through the years.

Everyone focuses on features. Think about trust
It's always interesting to watch two fierce competitors in business. In the raw arena of 1-1 competition, there's no room for fluff. It's often a life-or-death competition to exist.

When it's one company against the other, watch the differences in what companies highlight (AKA positioning). It tells you a lot.

For example, iPhone (highlights style) vs. Android (customization).

Coke vs. Pepsi. (What do you think each company highlights?)

Or one of my favorites, two blenders.

On one side you got Blendtec. They're famous for their hilarious "Will it blend?" videos. They shove everything from iPads to glowsticks into their blenders to demonstrate their raw power.

Their opponent is Vitamix. How do you know if someone has a Vitamix? Don't worry, they'll tell you.

These are blenders. To the average person, there's no meaningful difference between the two. If you look at cost, power, and performance, it's pretty much a toss up.

But look at some these Amazon reviews, and it's clear there's a deep line drawn in the sand:

"I have owned a Vitamix for over 2 years. My daughter has owned a Blendtec for the same period of time. We call this "Blender wars", as we both love our blenders. Because there are major differences we see between the two."

"I purchased (and then promptly returned) the Blendtec. I returned it within a week. I put it through the same paces as above with the Vita-mix. It failed the same tests.Blendtec was not an acceptable alternative to the Vita-mix."

"Way more horsepower than the Vitamix. The Blendtec motor is so strong it does not need sharp blades like what the Vitamix has."

How would you decide which one to buy?

If you ask anybody that owns one, they'll say they bought their blender based on wattage, size, power, etc.

But at the rarefied levels of $300 blenders or $2,000 sheets, people are rarely making decisions on specs, speed, or thread count.

If you dig a little deeper, you'll find the real reason for their purchase. A friend, a colleague, or someone they trust recommended it to them. Or, more commonly, they saw someone they admire using it or wearing it - George Clooney wearing sunglasses, for example - and suddenly, it was something they wanted to be a part of.

Fascinating.

All it takes is a little nudge from a trusted source and people are willing to cough up $300+ FOR A BLENDER. (And then defend their purchase on random internet websites.)

To non-blending fanatics, this seems nuts. I use a $25 version I got from a friend. But I bet you've experienced something very similar.

This doesn't happen at commodity levels. If you're buying a $1 bag of nails, you'll choose the cheaper one - it's a commodity, so who cares what George Clooney uses. But think about the way you buy more expensive goods.

More expensive goods - a bed, a car, college - is less about features/specs, and more about trust. The higher you move up the value chain, the more trust matters.

Try to think about the methods that companies use to earn your trust. For example, we do this at IWT: One of the hallmarks of my business is building students for life. That means things like giving away 98% of our material free. (You can find 300+ videos on entrepreneurship, careers, personal finance and more on my YouTube page.) We also turn down millions of dollars every year by not accepting anyone with credit card debt into our programs.

Now think about how you can use the idea of trust in your life. Here's a hint: Most people approach these decisions and focus on features and specs, instead of trust.

AVERAGE PERSON WHO WANTS A RAISE: "I know! I'll send my boss a list of facts and figures accomplished this year. That'll show him I deserve a raise."

SMART PERSON WHO WANTS A RAISE: "I know I need to send over a list of facts/figures on why I deserve it. But my raise is also based on the tiny decisions I make over the course of a year that lets my boss trust me - responding quickly, taking things off his plate, and thinking 2 steps ahead."

The bottom line: The more you move up the value chain, the more trust matters. While others are focused on tactical minutiae like features, you can use trust to build relationships, help your friends, and live a Rich Life.

Thank you, and happy holidays.

If you want to learn even more about trust, I invited Charles Green - trust expert and author of Trust-based Selling and The Trusted Advisor - into our studio to talk about exactly how trust works.

Dealing with a bad boss: Nutty horror stories
OK, who here has a terrible boss?

Today, I want to talk about them, because if you have one, you think about them every single day you go to work.

What makes a bad boss?

Maybe they're overbearing and rude. Maybe they dismiss every idea you have.

Or maybe they're the spineless boss that meekly says, "Sorry, I can't give you a raise.that's all the wiggle room I have." If he can't stand up for himself, how will he ever stand up for you?

Just try to imagine the look on someone's face on a Sunday afternoon as they think about going back to work for their boss the next day. I can see them in my mind, drinking at a Sunday brunch and complaining about something their boss did. Their friends, who've heard this 50 times, roll their eyes and try to change the subject. It's hilarious.as long as it's someone else. That last line is also my life philosophy.

A bad boss means that every day - for 8+ hours/day, 2,000+ hours/year - some of us are walking around on pins and needles, dreading seeing our boss. It's like walking around with a 50lb weight on your shoulders that you can't take off.because it's also secretly keeping you alive (aka giving you a paycheck).

Now here's the interesting part.

Of all the people who have bad bosses, how many leave to find another job? Maybe 1 in 100? Why does everyone else stay? You're not a slave. You can leave whenever you want.

There's a lot of boo-hoo, woe-is-me, waa-the-economy-is-so-bad. Actually, no, it's not. Top performers can get a job in days in this economy. (In fact, we're hiring for lots of positions.)

If you have a bad boss, it's not your fault - but it is your responsibility to do something about it. Once you've admitted that your boss is bad and you want out, you have 3 options:

Try to change your boss (unlikely)
Find another job (hmm, if only there were some way to find your Dream Job)
Do nothing and complain (I'll see you in hell)

It's just like being in a bad relationship. You can blame it on them all you want.but ultimately, it's your decision to stay or leave.

One of the skills that few people talk about is knowing when to quit. Seth Godin writes about this in The Dip, where he says:

".What really sets superstars apart from everyone else is the ability to escape dead ends quickly, while staying focused and motivated when it really counts.

Winners quit fast, quit often, and quit without guilt - until they commit to beating the right Dip for the right reasons."

For all the people who complain about a bad boss, how many of them spotted the telltale signs - years ago? And did nothing?

Ultimately, it comes down to this: You don't have to accept a bad boss. It's not "normal" or part of paying your dues. Nobody should have to sigh and say, "Another Monday.back to the grind."

I actually think a lot of us are in this situation - a lot more than we want to admit. So I want open up the conversation around this.
What's your boss horror story?

Do you have a bad boss? Did you finally escape? I want you to share your boss horror stories in the comments.

Beyond pure curiosity, I want to start a conversation about this. What made them so bad? And as you write this, notice how it makes you feel.

Share your boss horror story in the comments below. Don't worry about naming any names or revealing yourself. You can keep it completely anonymous.

This isn't just for employees, either. If you've been a boss, flip it. What's your employee horror story?

I'm excited to read yours.

P.S. It's fun to commiserate about horrible bosses. But I'm more interested in understanding what we can do about it.

Recently, I heard one of the most fascinating boss horror stories of all time. It came from a guest in my Brain Trust program, Kevin Hillstrom. Today, Kevin is the CEO of a successful business, MineThatData (and an amazing strategist). But early in his career, he was an awkward junior analyst - with ZERO communication and business skills.

One day, he was sitting in his cubicle and overheard his boss saying horrible things about him behind closed doors.

Instead of complaining about how bad his boss was, he took a totally different perspective - one that changed his entire career.

A few years ago, I was at a dinner party with a bunch of new people. There were lots of people from the self-development world and we were all getting to know each other.

It was a pretty normal dinner until one woman - who'd been in a string of bad relationships - started asking for advice from the "love coach" sitting across from her.

"It's not about finding random men," she said. "I keep going on horrible dates. The guys are unavailable. Why can't I find someone real?"

It's actually pretty amazing to hear this in public from someone you just met. I sat back, slowly chewing and loving every minute of it.

The love coach sat back and waited for her to finish. "Are you sure you want to change?"

The girl: "YES!"

And then she said this:

"You've been public as a single woman. You've written columns about going on dates. Your entire identity is about being single. If you got in a serious relationship, you'd have to rewrite that entire identity. Are you ready for that?"

I will never forget the look on this woman's face. She was completely dumbfounded.

Of course, I found this fascinating. Even though this woman claimed she wanted to change, in reality, she didn't want to give up being single.

Every date, she looked for the tiniest things to go wrong. And when they did, it was an instant red flag, "This guy's all wrong for me." In other words, she'd written off her dates and committed to staying single - before they even happened!

The most interesting part is she hadn't even realized she was doing this until the love coach pointed it out.

How many of us have created an identity around something that's holding us back from living a Rich Life?

The truth is, we all do this. How many of us want to change our job, lose 20lbs, or dress better? Easy to complain about it. But what if there was an invisible script guiding us to make the wrong decisions.that we didn't even consciously recognize? ("I'm not the kind of guy who needs to change my clothing.that's for shallow people.")

We all have this - me included! There are things I want to do that I can't seem to bring myself to do. And that's why I flew one of the world's foremost experts on changing behavior into studio for an interview.
A Harvard Lecturer puts Ramit in the hotseat

Meet Lisa Lahey, Harvard Lecturer and co-founder of Minds at Work. Lisa studies why we say we want to change - when we really don't.

She was a guest in my Brain Trust program and gave an incredibly insightful 1hr+ long interview.

But today, I just want to highlight one part of our session in particular: where she rolls up her sleeves and puts ME in the hotseat.

We talk about the bane of my existence: delegating. It's something I've struggled with a lot.

It's actually a little uncomfortable to talk about it. But Lisa zeroed in on it and helped me uncover some of the real reasons I said, "I really need to delegate, but." and kept putting it off.

Watch this Harvard Lecturer put me in the hotseat below.

By the way, the lessons in this video don't just apply to me or running a business. They apply to any situation where you find yourself talking about what you need to do - lose weight, start a business, or get a better job - and haven't yet.

I believe you can use these insights for any challenge you're facing and create a breakthrough for yourself with in the next 48 hours.

Ramit's Brain Trust - How the best get even better - Marshall Goldsmith

Here's an interesting thing I learned when I used to consult for venture capital firms. If all goes according to plan.

Out of a ton of potential deals, a VC firm will invest in 10 companies.

5 of those will go bankrupt. They know this and expect it.

3 of them will "trade sideways," meaning they'll basically putter along.

But 1 of them will be a huge hit. Like Google/Uber-worthy hits. That single deal pays for everything else.

What are the interesting things to take away from this example?

After a while, you can build a model of what you expect and optimize for it. For example, I used to get random speeding tickets, but then I realized I could predict when I would get them, so I built them into my automation model.
Being the best is way, way better than being #2. Like 1,000x better.

I want to talk about studying the best, because I've noticed too many people studying nutjobs and weirdos and thinking it's okay.

I see people buying courses from some random guy living in his mom's basement, selling an ebook on how to make a billion dollars, and I want to put my head in my hands.

I'd rather introduce you to amazing, successful entrepreneurs who can show you new ways to think. There's major value in learning from the best: They've seen tons of scenarios, they've surrounded themselves with better people, and they've gotten more "at-bat" opportunities than almost anyone else.

To do that, I went to one of the most successful consultants in the world. In fact, if you google "helping successful leaders," you'll notice something strange. Virtually all of the 3,530 search results point to one person: Dr. Marshall Goldsmith.

Harvard Business Review and The Wall Street Journal note that Dr. Goldsmith is one of the top 10 leadership and business experts in the world. He's also the author of What Got You Here Won't Get You There (one of my favorite book titles of all time).

I recently sat down with him and asked him questions I'd been wanting to ask for years. Like, "What do you really teach the CEO of Wal-Mart when you do a consulting project? How does it even work when you walk in the room?"

Being the best is never an accident. If you're aiming to be amazing at what you do - whether it's your business, your job, or even your relationship - one of the best things you can do is elevate who you study from.

(For example, no more reading life coaches who are secretly struggling to pay their bills.)

Dr. Goldsmith is one of the few people who can answer these questions. Recently, I sat down to talk with him as part of my Brain Trust Program.

I want to share one of my favorite parts from our chat. In it, he talks about:

What it really means when you attract and repel people - on purpose (1:16)
A fatal mistake that smart people make - I am guilty of this (5:02)
Why you should stop starting sentences with "no," "but," and "however" - a classic flaw of successful people (7:50). Again, I do this!
