TTC - The Celtic World - Medbay
Following the surge of interest and pride in Celtic identity since the 19th century, much of what we thought we knew about the Celts has been radically transformed. From the warriors who nearly defeated Julius Caesar to druids who, contrary to popular opinion, definitely did not worship at Stonehenge, get to know the real Celts.

In The Celtic World, discover the incredible story of the Celtic-speaking peoples, whose art, language, and culture once spread from Ireland to Austria. This series of 24 enlightening lectures explains the traditional historical view of who the Celts were, then contrasts it with brand-new evidence from DNA analysis and archeology that totally changes our perspective on where the Celts came from. European history and culture have been profoundly affected by the Celts, from the myth of King Arthur to the very map of the United Kingdom, where the English confronted the peoples of the "Celtic Fringe."

With a wealth of historical expertise, Professor Jennifer Paxton (PhD Harvard University), Director of the University Honors Program and Clinical Assistant Professor of History at The Catholic University of America, guides you through each topic related to Celtic history with approachability and ease as you unearth what we once thought it meant - and what it may actually mean - to be Celtic. Professor Paxton's engaging, often humorous delivery blends perfectly with the facts about the Celts to uncover surprising historical revelations. The ancient Celts are very much alive in the literary and artistic traditions that their descendants have both preserved and very deliberately revived. All facets of Celtic life, past and present, are addressed by Professor Paxton, who demonstrates a masterful knowledge and carefully separates fact from myth at every turn. Come along for a ride through history to discover your inner Celt.

TTC - The Ethics of Aristotle - Medbay
In this 12-lecture meditation on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, you'll uncover the clarity and ethical wisdom of one of humanity's greatest minds. Father Koterski shows how and why this great philosopher can help you deepen and improve your own thinking on questions of morality and leading the best life. The aim of these lectures is to provide you with a clear and thoughtful introduction to Aristotle as a moral philosopher. After absorbing some important background information designed to introduce you to Aristotle's career and general approach to the various fields of knowledge, you turn to the ten books (today we would call them chapters) of this brief but towering work. Throughout, you'll consider Aristotle's account of the four main virtues of courage, moderation, justice, and prudence; his claims that happiness (eudaimonia) is the real goal of life; his explanations of how and why people attain- or fall short of- ethical excellence; his differences with his teachers Plato and Socrates over the hard question of what knowing rightly has to do with acting rightly; where Aristotle's thought fits into the long history of ethical reflection; and much more.

Prepare for an illuminating, mind-broadening, and thought-provoking learning experience, and a chance to get up close and personal with one of Western philosophy's founding fathers.

TTC - The Everyday Gourmet, How to Master Outdoor Cooking
Steak. Asparagus. Pineapple. On a pleasant day when family or friends are near, nothing beats firing up the grill for a great meal. Most of us, however, don’t take full advantage of all the possibilities for outdoor cooking. Not only can the grill provide a savory seared crust on a juicy steak or add smoky flavor to some barbecue chicken, the grill can also enhance salads, side dishes, and a variety of meats beyond your traditional hamburgers and hot dogs.
Picture a Caesar salad with bread charred on the grill and topped with reggiano parmesan. Or how about a king salmon cooked over cedar plank wood, a mixed grill with marinated quail and Italian sausage, or iber-roasted potatoes to accompany the main course? And of course, you’ll want a nice vinaigrette with your side salad.

Whether you’re just starting out or you have a wide range of skills, The Everyday Gourmet: How to Master Outdoor Cooking gives you the chance to boost your culinary repertoire and take full advantage of the grillвЂ"your “outdoor kitchen.” Taught by Bill Briwa and Patrick Clark, two highly acclaimed chefs at the Culinary Institute of America, these twelve informative lectures are filled with detailed demonstrations of techniques and recipes from around the world that will liven up your summer meals.

The beauty of outdoor cooking is in going back to basics, using simple tools and your own sensual awareness of the process to make delicious food. Whether it’s the feel of heat from the grill, the sweet smell of fire-roasted onions, or the sound of a sizzling steak over flame, all of your senses play a role in success with the grill. Your instructors show you what the various sights, sounds, and smells meanвЂ"and how to make adjustments as you go to create the perfect dish, every time.

Explore All the Fundamentals of Outdoor Cooking

Along with clear lessons in cooking techniques and recipes, Chefs Briwa and Clark also tell you everything you need to know about operating the grill. For instance, you will:

Explore different types of wood and charcoal fuel sources, including oak and mesquite.
Consider different cuts of meat, from beef brisket to pork shoulder to fish, and how best to cook them.
Find out what utensils you need to get the job done, from charcoal chimneys to skewers.
See how to create “zones” of heat on the grill to select just the right temperature for cooking different foods.

You’ll get a number of insider tricks for cooking on and off the grill, as well as tips for how to avoid some of the most common mistakes people make. You’ll learn how to tell how well done meat is cooked by using your thumb and forefinger. Away from the grill, you’ll examine several rules of thumb for creating marinades, dry rubs, vinaigrettes, and more. Plus, discover an easier way of cutting garlic and chopping walnuts, among other handy shortcuts.

Whether you’re a novice griller who sticks to hamburgers and hot dogs around the holidays or an experienced cook interesting in expanding your repertoire, Chefs Briwa and Clark guide you through all the ins and outs of outdoor cooking.

Discover Recipes From Around the World

There might not be anything more quintessentially American than grilling on Memorial Day or the Fourth of July, but outdoor cooking is global in its appeal. Cooking over an open fire has brought humans together for millennia, so it’s no surprise to find delicious recipes from many culinary traditions. As you learn to infuse different flavors and ingredients, you’ll see step-by-step instructions for recipes from around the world:

The Mediterranean: Sicilian steak with rich tomato sauce, eggplant sandwich with homemade tzatziki, lamb kabobs, and more.

East and Southeast Asia: Vietnamese liongrass pork, Korean marinated short ribs, Japanese yakitori, Thai beef satay in peanut sauce, and beyond.

Latin America: Caribbean jerk chicken with fire-and-ice fruit salad, skirt steak with orange mojo, pibil-marinated halibut cooked inside banana leaves… the list goes on.

In addition to a wealth of recipes from around the world, you’ll also discover a few new takes on some classic American dishes. Travel through the South for a survey of the great barbeque cultures in the Carolinas, Tennessee, and TexasвЂ"including the different types of regional sauces. You’ll also learn how to make your own pizza dough, whip up a number of marinades, and much, much more.

Master Every Course of the Meal

While we may associate meat with the grill, Chefs Briwa and Clark show you how the grill is really your outdoor kitchenвЂ"capable of preparing every course of the meal, from appetizers and salads to side dishes and dessert. In fact, some of the most creative and delicious entrees rely on little or no meat.

Whether you’re hosting a summer block party or just looking to cook something unique for your immediate family, you’ll learn how to make grilled Bartlett pears with bitter greens and blue cheese, a grilled vegetable platter with shirred eggs, bruschetta, crostini, and more. Your chefs also give you a wide range of marinade and vinaigrette recipes to compliment what you cook on the grill.

From fire-roasted salsa to a sweet treat made from grilled bread and chocolate, outdoor cooking is one of the most versatile, accessible ways to prepare a meal. In short, grilled food simply tastes better, and The Everyday Gourmet: How to Master Outdoor Cooking gives you masterful instruction to take your culinary skills to the next level.

A Vivid Encounter with Ancient Life
Professor Hale has walked these superlative sites in depth, in the course of decades of archaeological work and study in the region. As a core element of his teaching, he invites you to touch these vanished worlds and ways of life.

On the Acropolis, you travel the site, following the path of the ancient annual procession honoring Athena. At Delphi, your visit reconstructs a pilgrimage to the oracle in classical times, taking you through the rituals of offerings and religious observances on the way to consult the Pythia (priestess), who answers each pilgrim's question. At Hagia Sophia, you envision the experience of a 6th-century visitor, amid the pomp and embroidered finery of the Byzantine royals.

Scenic Islands, Otherworldly Landscapes
Parallel with your historical journey, you learn about the extraordinary natural wonders of the Aegean, an unforgettable feature of travel in these lands.

On the Greek islands, you discover Crete's dramatic Samaria Gorge and the breathtaking volcanic archipelago of Milos and Santorini, as well as scenic riches, including the transcendent vista of the Cycladic islands from Mount Kynthos.

In the course's second half, you explore Turkey's richly beautiful Turquoise CoastвЂ"its crusader castles, submerged cities, and unique wildlife. In the central highlands, you linger in the mysterious topography of Cappadocia, with its geologic "fairy chimneys" and ancient cave dwellings.

A Rich and Diverse Educational Journey
Throughout Professor Hale's multitextured narrative, you enjoy

detailed location footage in each lecture;
illuminating maps in both the lectures and course guidebook; and
vivid 3-D re-creations of ancient monuments and sites.
Professor Hale enriches these lectures with engrossing stories of ancient life, his own extraordinary experiences, and his insightful reflections on how these civilizations unfolded. Among learning about many history makers, you meet Herodotus, Galen, Paul the Apostle, and the emperor Justinian of Byzantium. You contemplate the original Hippocratic oath and the moving words of the Sufi poet Rumi on human seeking and the journey of life. And you track Professor Hale's fascinating work with colleagues at Delphi, vindicating Plutarch's claim that the trance state of the oracle's priestess was linked to intoxicating vapors present at the site.

Professor Hale reveals not only the cultural and archaeological history, but also the local lore, legends, foods, pleasure spots, and out-of-the-way gems that make this part of the world such a seductive draw. You learn about the wines of Monemvasia and Santorini; places to enjoy ancient spas and baths; a sublime Aegean town where you can savor Greek life to the full; and where to drink Turkish tea in Ottoman splendor.

With Professor Hale as your guide, you will touch the ancient world, retracing the steps of great ancient oracles, athletes, playwrights, and warriors and reliving their experiences:

Lie on the same benches at Amphiareon where oracles read dreams.
Crouch at the starting line for an Olympic race.
Stand on the stage at Epidauros, whisper, and be heard in the highest row.
March along the walls of Troy like the heroes of Homer's epics.
The glory of past civilizations still lives in these magical sites and monuments, and in the same beautiful Aegean Sea and landscapes that the ancients traveled. In The Great Tours: Greece and Turkey, from Athens to Istanbul, these extraordinary lands are yours to discover and rediscover. Come with us as we touch lost worldsвЂ"as we find humanity's majestic past and the great cultures that gave us the world we know.

TTC - The Roman Empire, From Augustus to the Fall of Rome - Medbay
In 31 BCE, on an otherwise unremarkable afternoon in the Mediterranean, the Roman general Octavian surveyed the aftermath of the ferocious Battle of Actium, where he’d defeated his rival Mark Antony in a war for control of Rome. This moment, in which a military leader rests and reflects on his next move toward becoming the sole leader of the Western world, is the germ out of which grows one of the most breathtaking stories in world history. This leader would soon ingeniously maneuver his way to become Rome’s first emperor, setting the stage for five centuries of Roman expansion; warfare; and, ultimately, collapse.

When Octavian, who took the title of Augustus as the first emperor of Rome, defeated Mark Antony to become the sole ruler of the Roman world, it was a major turning point in Western civilization. Not only did his decades-long rule completely transform the old Roman Republic into the Roman Empire, but it also profoundly shaped the culture and history of our world today. The Roman Empire: From Augustus to the Fall of Rome traces this breathtaking history from the empire’s foundation by Augustus to its Golden Age in the 2nd century CE through a series of ever-worsening crises until its ultimate disintegration.

Taught by acclaimed Professor Gregory S. Aldrete of the University of WisconsinвЂ"Green Bay, these 24 captivating lectures offer you the chance to experience this story like never before, incorporating the latest historical research, perspectives, and insights that challenge our previous notions of Rome’s decline. Professor Aldrete examines the major events and familiar figures of the Roman Empire, including:

The political innovations of AugustusвЂ"and his one major shortcoming;
The mental instability and cruel acts of Caligula and Nero;
Writers such as Ovid, Horace, and Virgil;
The stoic philosophy of Marcus Aurelius;
Attila the Hun, Alaric, and other “barbarians” who threatened the empire; and
Christian philosophers such as Augustine and Jerome.

But this course also moves beyond the famous figures and delves deeply into the lives of ordinary Roman women and men. You’ll read the messages they left on tombstones or scribbled on walls as graffiti; examine what life was really like for average city-dwellers and the hazards they faced every day; spend a day in Rome’s spectacular public entertainments, such as gladiator games and chariot races; and explore some of the city’s marvelous architectural and engineering works, including the Pantheon and the aqueducts.

The more you learn about the ancient Romans, the more you will realize how much we still walk in their footsteps. From particulars of the English language to our system of government to our religious practices, we are still experiencing the echoes of the Roman Empire in our world today. Indeed, we cannot truly understand ourselves unless we comprehend the vital influences of Rome on the modern worldвЂ"and the lessons the empire can still teach us. The Roman Empire: From Augustus to the Fall of Rome is an informativeвЂ"and highly entertainingвЂ"guide to one of the most important periods in world history.

Study the Roman EmperorsвЂ"Stable and Strong, Strange and Insane

One major theme throughout the Roman Empire is the tenuous nature of power. Because Augustus selected heredity as his succession plan, each emperor had to reckon with choosingвЂ"or, in some cases, adoptingвЂ"his heir. Frequently, emperors who inherited the title were incompetent at best, and some were downright depraved.

Because history is ultimately about people, Professor Aldrete introduces you to the characters behind the names, and brings their stories to life. You’ll find out who stabilized Rome, and how; who spent money on useless projects such as a 100-foot golden statue of himself in the nude; who the citizens loved and who the citizens feared. For instance:

Tiberius was dour and introverted, and was often tight-fisted, which didn’t endear him to the citizens, but he did secure the borders.
Caligula, meanwhile, took the throne riding a wave of popularity, but his reign soon degenerated into madness, bizarre actions, and terror.
Nero never fiddled while Rome burned, but he did murder senators, citizens, and even his own mother (a process that took numerous Monty Python-esque twists and turns).
Domitian had a habit of shutting himself in his room for hours at a time, catching and impaling flies.
Constantine founded a second capital city for the Empire at Byzantium and immodestly renamed it Constantinople after himself.

Discover Rome as Experienced by Everyday Citizens

While surveying the major figures gives you a broad look at the empire’s history, Professor Aldrete goes beyond the traditional “kings and battles” approach to show you what life was like for ordinary peopleвЂ"starting with the nature of the city itself.

Given the traditional historical emphasis on Rome as a civilized city of good governance, engineering marvels, and magnificent architecture, you might believe the city was a clean metropolis made up of beautiful marble and elegant baths. In reality, the city was dirty, dank, and disease-ridden. Professor Aldrete cites the five F’s: floods, fires, famine, filth, and feversвЂ"not a place you’d want to visit.

Traditional history has relied on elite, upper-class, and primarily male sources to tell us about life in Rome, but recent historians have focused on additional sources to bring the story of everyday Romans to life. In this course, you’ll examine a variety of sources that were previously overlooked or unexamined, including letters; administrative documents; epitaphs on tombstones; and, perhaps most interestingly, graffiti.

The graffiti gives us exciting insight into the minds of people long goneвЂ"and long ignored in the history books. You’ll discover eerily modern-sounding commentary on the walls of Pompeii, preserved thanks to the infamous volcano: advertisements for rooms for rent, creative and amusing political campaign ads, complaints about service in the local tavern, vulgar commentary, and even simple announcements along the lines of “Septimius was here.”

Investigate Why and When Rome Finally Collapsed

Two of the most intriguing questions about the Roman Empire are why, and when, it collapsed. As you’ll discover, historians can make the case for numerous years, including:

31 BCE: The Battle of Actium, which marked the end of the Old Republic
180 CE: The death of Marcus Aurelius, the last in a string of “good” emperors during Rome’s Golden Age
312: Constantine’s conversion to Christianity, the next major force to sweep across the West
410: The Visigoth Alaric’s sack of Rome
1453: The fall of Constantinople to the Turks
1917: The Russian revolution and the final end of a system that had once considered itself the ideological heirs of Rome

Professor Aldrete does not give you an easy answer, but rather shows how history develops over time, driven by a multiplicity of factors. Forces ranging from barbarian invasions to economic collapse to climate change all played a role in the gradual end of the Roman Empire.

He also brings in a fascinating counter-perspective. The traditional story is one of collapse as Rome disintegrated and the gloomy “Dark Ages” emerged in the 4th and 5th centuries. Recently, historians have been re-examining the years from 200-600 and discovering a different story. They see in this eraвЂ"“late antiquity”вЂ"invigorating change and a vibrant mingling of cultures.

Historians could debate the end of the empire all day, but Professor Aldrete simply presents the evidence and leaves it to you to formulate your own answers. One thing is certain: The Roman Empire may be ancient history, but it is far from over. The Roman Empire: From Augustus to the Fall of Rome gives you an exciting, informative, often-amusing, and always entertaining look at an era and a people who continue to astound and interest us today.

As consumers of medical news, how can we know whether the article we just read is based on solid science or trash?

We know we can’t believe every article we read. If we did, we’d conclude that everything causes cancer; any non-organic food will cause our death; we should never eat fats or carbohydrates; and high-dose supplements of every vitamin will save our lives or, depending on the specific article, kill us.

Professor Roy Benaroch of Emory University School of Medicine provides just the direction we need to answer important questions, look beyond media hype, and more in The Skeptic’s Guide to Health, Medicine, and the Media. In 24 fascinating lectures that address the most important health issues of our day, Dr. Benaroch shows us how to recognize the good reporting that provides balanced, accurate, and well-sourced information and the bad reporting that is incomplete at best and purposely misleading at worst. You’ll learn how to ask the questions that take you past the headlines and beyond the way health news is typically reported.

Would You Believe?

Dr. Benaroch provides numerous examples of headlines you wouldn’t fall forвЂ"or would you? While some headlines are published on obscure internet sites, others are published in some of the largest, most-trusted papers in the country. Every day, people take the bait to read about:

“Breatharian Couple Survives on the Universe’s Energy Instead of Food.” Just a little bit of digging reveals that the couple actually does eat food. Of course, they do.
“Traces of Controversial Herbicide Are Found in Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream.” The article itself states that a typical child would need to consume 145,000 eight-ounce servings a day to reach the federal safety limit of the chemical in question. But the headline made for great “clickbait” since it used the successful technique of pairing a random fact with a recognizable brand name.
“The Soothing Benefit of Acupuncture for Babies.” The article states the goal of the study was to use acupuncture to soothe babies and shorten their crying spellsвЂ"and then makes it clear that the acupuncture didn’t actually work. Yet, you would never know this from the headline.
Addressing the Top Medical Controversies of the Day

In providing samples of both good and bad medical journalism, The Skeptic’s Guide addresses both significant medical topics and smaller, everyday questions like, “Should I floss?” Some of the major issues and subjects you will look at include:

Cardiovascular health and the new blood pressure guidelines,
Cancer screenings and treatment,
The opioid crisis,
The obesity epidemic,
The price of prescription medication,
The stigma of mental health, and more.
To better understand these issues in all their complexity, you’ll go behind the headlines to learn more about the subjects themselves, as well as the media’s role in addressing them.

Building Your Skeptic’s Toolkit

With so many false or misleading sources out there, it can be natural for readers to become cynical about medical reporting and headline news. However, as Dr. Benaroch points out, there’s a difference between being a cynic and being a skeptic. Becoming a cynic and believing nothing of what you read would be just as ineffective as being gullible and believing everything. There is good health-related information out there, and The Skeptic’s Guide to Health, Medicine, and Media will teach you how to access it. You’ll learn six specific questions to ask yourself as you read, all of which begin with the letter “s” for ease of remembering. These questions form the basis of your “Skeptic’s Toolkit,” the lens through which you can determine the value of any article. They are:

Source. What’s the source of the article and is it credible for medical information? Is the article based on a study from a reputable university or research institute? Or is it based on anecdotal information from a non-scientist? You might be interested in reading a first-person account about someone whose blood pressure improved when she started drinking teaвЂ"but you wouldn’t want to base your own medical decisions on it.
Strength. Is the evidence presented strong enough to be valuable? Stories that review large clinical trials are much stronger than stories about small pilot studies. Dr. Benaroch explains why the strongest studies are the gold standard double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled experiments with a large number of participants.
Salesmanship. Is the article trying to sell me something or promote a particular brand? Many media accounts are repackaged press releases whose purpose is to sell a product. That doesn’t mean the story is false, but it does mean you’re probably not getting a balanced viewpoint. And salesmanship worksвЂ"as evidenced by, among other examples, the $1.2-billion fish oil supplement industry in the United States that is going strong despite 15 years of research that reveals no actual health benefits.
Salience. Is this study about people like me, and are the factors they’re measuring in the study important to me? If the article refers to a study about children, you can’t assume the results hold true for adults. As one example, Dr. Benaroch highlights an article claiming to show that cell phone exposure increases the risk of cancer. But actually, the experiment was conducted on rats.
Sides of the Scale. Does the news report try to present a viewpoint from scientists not directly involved in the study, or from people with appropriate expertise who can offer a balanced viewpoint? The article should quote additional experts in the field, not just the study authors. And, if there are legitimate disagreements about the study, those should be mentioned, too. But don’t fall for a false equivalence in which invalid or untrue assertions are given equal weight to established scientific consensus.
Sensible. Is the story itself sensible, making sense and fitting in with what we already know? It doesn’t matter how many times you sneeze while driving, we know that cars do not cause the common coldвЂ"no matter how nice the alliteration sounds. Exaggerations in headlines should also send up a red flag. “Miracle cures” and “magic bullet” might get our attention, but those descriptions almost always point to inflated or false claims.
With Dr. Benaroch’s guidance, you’ll know how to find information you can truly rely on. And you’ll know which articles to put straight in the trash.

TTC - The Third Wave, The Future of Entrepreneurship in America

Analyses of the ubiquity of the Internet’s influence have become trite. More than 30 years and 3 billion daily users later, we need an informed vision of where the Internet is going, what it means, and how every entrepreneur and innovator can ride the wave to greater success. To accomplish this bold task, The Great Courses has teamed with legendary Internet pioneer, technology entrepreneur, and philanthropic ambassador Steve Case to offer you a powerful series on the future of American entrepreneurship.

You’ll learn how First Wave companies like America Online laid the foundation for consumers to access the burgeoning Internet, and how Second Wave companies like Google and Facebook enabled users to search and connect to each other, while apps such as Instagram and others leveraged the smartphone revolution. Finally, Mr. Case will share his profound vision for the Third Wave, in which entrepreneurs will revolutionize major sectors of our daily livesвЂ"from food to education and from transportation to health care.

Far from an exercise in crystal ballвЂ"gazing, these talks offer authoritative analyses of just how this Third Wave is already buildingвЂ"and how to join it.

TTC - What Darwin Didn’t Know, The Modern Science of Evolution

Writing the final pages of his masterpiece The Origin of Species, Charles Darwin looked ahead to the work yet to be done on his groundbreaking theory of evolution by natural selection. “In the distant future,” he predicted, “I see open fields for far more important researches.”

How right he was. In the more than a century and a half since Origin was published in 1859, evolution has emerged as the fundamental concept in all of biology, explaining Earth’s endlessly diverse organisms while spawning new disciplines such as genetics, molecular biology, and evolutionary medicine. The tremendous progress in the fields that emerged from his original theories would have astounded even Darwin, who did not live to see developments such as:

The discovery of the rules of heredity;
The identification of DNA as the carrier of genetic information;
Fossil discoveries that fill major evolutionary gaps and offer new insights;
The recognition of multiple mass extinctions in Earth’s history;
The ability to read the genetic code of any organism; and
The power to manipulate genetic material.

And this is just a sample of the deep insights and remarkable conclusions that Darwin’s ideas inspired. What Darwin Didn’t Know: The Modern Science of Evolution charts this scientific revolution in 24 stimulating half-hour lectures suitable for curious learners at all levels, no matter what your background in science.

Darwin is renowned for his globe-circling voyage on the HMS Beagle when he was a young man, collecting observations that eventually led to the theory of natural selection. The outstanding teacher of What Darwin Didn’t Know is no less a world traveler. Professor Scott Solomon of Rice University has explored much of Earth’s amazing biodiversity as a field biologist, and he brings hands-on experience to these fascinating lectures, which cover 160 years of non-stop scientific advances.

The Theory of Evolution Takes Off

Professor Solomon begins by laying the foundation of Darwin’s theoryвЂ"how he struggled to find an explanation for the tremendous variety within species, and how he hit on the idea that better-adapted organisms tend to survive and produce more offspring, driving evolution in the direction of beneficial traits. He was already familiar with artificial selection, accomplished through plant and animal breeding. Nature, Darwin surmised, must be following a similar path with natural selection favoring some randomly-appearing variations over others. Professor Solomon tells how another naturalist, Alfred Russel Wallace, worked out an almost identical theory around the same time as Darwin (Darwin magnanimously ensured that their results were published simultaneously).

Darwin continued to refine his theory throughout his life, but much remained to be done by his successors. For example, the biggest gap in Darwin’s knowledge was the science of genetics, which was single-handedly pioneered by a little-known Austrian monk and part-time botanist named Gregor Mendel. Largely unnoticed until the early 20th century, Mendel’s conclusions about the discrete nature of hereditary traits proved to be the key to explaining how traits can pass intact from one generation to the next. With this, Darwin's theory that adaptive mutations can be transmitted gained a sound basis, and evolution took off as a rigorous and powerfully predictive science, accumulating steady improvements to Darwin’s original ideas, such as:

• Natural selection in real time: Darwin believed that evolution always advances with extreme slowness. But biologists in the field have documented wild speciesвЂ"from Galapagos finches to flies infesting fruitвЂ"that acquire useful adaptations with stunning speed, sometimes in only a few generations.

• Plate tectonics: Darwin noticed that obviously related species often exist on opposite sides of the world’s great oceans. This mystery was solved by the theory of plate tectonics, which shows that the continents move, dividing populations, which then evolve separately while retaining many common characteristics.

• Universal genetic code: Darwin introduced the “Tree of Life” and the possibility that all of life evolved from a common ancestor, a view that was largely rejected in his own time. But biologists have demonstrated that every known type of lifeвЂ"from bacteria to human beingsвЂ"uses the same DNA code inherited from a single ancestor.

The Road to Humans

Darwin did not deal with the evolution of humans in The Origin of Species, saving that controversial topic for The Descent of Man, which he published in 1871. Together with his colleague Thomas Henry Huxley, Darwin argued that humans share a common ancestor with the great apes, based on the many similar anatomical features we share with them. In What Darwin Didn’t Know, you learn that the evidence for this connection has grown impressively since Darwin’s day. For example, recent DNA analyses show that our closest living relatives are chimpanzees. Next closest are gorillas and then orangutans. While the last common ancestor of all four lived around 10 million years ago, we shared a common ancestor with chimpanzees until as recently as 5 to 7 million years ago. You also explore the following intriguing findings and conjectures about human evolution:

• The perplexing path to us: Huxley proposed the classic view that humans evolved in a linear progression from primitive apes. But fossil discoveries show that the evolutionary path was much more complicated, with many branches, sub-branches, and dead-ends, along with one particular offshoot leading to Homo sapiens.

• Neanderthals and Denisovans: Two extinct branches of the human family tree are the celebrated Neanderthals and a recently discovered species or sub-species called the Denisovans. Both interbred with humans at some point, and a small percentage of their DNA has spread widely through modern human populations.

• The future of Homo sapiens: Is human evolution over thanks to modern medicine? Some biologists think so, but major evolutionary changes may be in our future as we exploit our ability to edit the human genome. Furthermore, any humans who leave the planet will face strong evolutionary pressures in extraterrestrial environments.

Evolution Is Inevitable

Professor Solomon points out that Darwin didn’t just suggest that species can evolve. One of the most important messages from the modern science of evolution is that evolution is a necessary feature of life. As long as life includes heredity and reproduction, all living things will evolve. Even a species that appears to have stayed the same for millions of years will turn out to have undergone many small changes, just to keep up with a changing environment. In short, evolution isn’t just possible. It’s inevitable.

In the final paragraph of The Origin of Species, Darwin slyly compared his discovery of evolution by natural selection to the revolution wrought by Isaac Newton with his law of universal gravitation. “There is grandeur in this view of life,” Darwin wrote about his theory, “…that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.”

Just as Newton had no idea about Einstein, Hawking, or his many other successors, so Darwin was in the dark about the brilliant scientists who would build on his work, creating the biological golden age that we are living through todayвЂ"a story told masterfully by Professor Solomon in this thrilling course.

Genre: eLearning | Language: English

ARE YOU BUILDING A STARTUP?
BUT YOU DON'T HAVE ATECHNICAL BACKGROUND?
You might wonder:

How do Idelegate software development when I know nothingabout it?

How can Iknow that this technical solution is better than the other?

How do I even find out if there are better solutions?

How can I choose developers or a Web agency without a technical background?

How do I trust developers or Web agencies when I can't even evaluate their work?

How can I be sure that developers are not being misleading?

How do I manage software development? Should I use outsourcing or internal developers?

What specific techniques are there to build a startup while saving money in the early stage?

WHAT DO YOU THINK A SENIOR CTO WOULD DO?
IN THE EARLY STAGE, A CTO WOULD USE HIS TECH MANAGEMENT SKILLS TO:

Outsource the development, making it go faster with appropriate resources

Avoid paying for a full-time developer once the product becomes available

Change the developer or the agency when it's relevant for the project

Choose several developers with particular skills instead of a general developer

Use technical experts in Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Game Design in order to create a more innovative solution

All those activities do not require any coding skills whatsoever. Just a bit of know-how and specific technical management skills.
With MyCTOFriend, you can move forward and learn to do the same for the early stage of your project.
